Unlock Your Potential: How a Positive Mindset Can Change Everything

Stanford’s BeWell explains how our minds are wired to make sense of the complex world around us. By developing our mindset, we can ensure success by dictating how a person reacts and takes actions based on values, experiences, and beliefs. As a result of these filters, we are able to process information more quickly and set expectations based on what we believe.

The problem with mindsets is that they can be double-edged swords. Despite simplifying information and guiding decisions, they can also become outdated or limit our thinking.

The good news? Mindsets are flexible enough that they can be changed. Carol Dweck, a Stanford psychologist, distinguished between two types: fixed and growth.

  • Fixed mindset. An individual with a fixed mindset believes that his or her abilities are set in stone. Setbacks are seen as proof of limitations, so they avoid challenges in order to preserve their self-esteem. As a result, anxiety, avoidance, and motivation to improve may occur.
  • Growth mindset. People who have a growth mindset believe they can learn and develop throughout their lives. Rather than viewing challenges as obstacles, they see them as opportunities to learn and grow. As a result, they become more resilient, embrace feedback, and persist through difficulties.

In short, mindsets influence how we perceive the world and interact with it. In order to achieve greater potential, we must understand their influence and adopt a growth mindset.

A person who understands this extremely well is Michael Hyatt.

Hyatt founded Full Focus and serves as the chairman. Throughout his career, he has scaled multiple companies, including a $250M publishing company with 700+ employees and a goal-achievement company that has grown 60% a year for the last four years. For three years in a row, Full Focus has been included on Inc. 5000’s list of fastest-growing companies in America, and it was named Inc.’s Best Work Place in 2020. Furthermore, he has written several New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling books, including “Platform, Living Forward,” “Your Best Year Ever,” “Free to Focus,” “The Vision Driven Leader,” and “Mind Your Mindset” (with his daughter Megan).

As Micheal explains in the following article, your mindset can therefore help you rewire your brain and replace negative stories it tells you with ones that empower you to live a rich and fulfilling life.

Sharing Stories, Building Resilience

Entrepreneurs are storytellers. They’re particularly skilled at sharing their triumphs and challenges when scaling and exiting businesses.

Thomas Nelson Publishers, a company Michael cofounded, taught Michael a valuable lesson. With only three salespeople, the company grew rapidly, but a distribution deal led to financial strain and closure. Despite this setback, Hyatt didn’t give up. As part of his entrepreneurial endeavors, he founded Full Focus, a company specializing in coaching and productivity tools.

Building a Strong Foundation

According to Michael, a strong team and a culture of realism are essential. Whenever you pursue growth or negotiate deals, he recommends anticipating different scenarios. Further, he said, the company needs a “rock-star” executive team.

An executive team with “rock-star” status is comprised of highly skilled and experienced individuals who provide a unique perspective and expertise. They don’t fear challenging the status quo. In addition to having strong leadership qualities and excellent communication skills, they are able to motivate and inspire others. In addition, they can adapt to uncertain conditions and thrive in them.

Exiting with Wisdom

In discussing exits, Michael emphasizes the importance of understanding deal terms, particularly covenants, which can affect financial performance. Through his experience leading Thomas Nelson through privatization, he highlighted the benefits of being a public company, such as transparency and diverse investors.

He also acknowledged the challenges of privatization, such as losing access to public capital markets and increasing financial pressures. Michael noted that Thomas Nelson had been able to focus on long-term strategic objectives and make decisions without scrutiny from public shareholders despite these challenges. Additionally, it enabled the company to streamline operations and implement changes more quickly, increasing efficiency and profitability.

The Power of Storytelling

Michael is a strong believer in the power of storytelling. He underscored the need for resilience to navigate the ever-changing world of entrepreneurship, which is filled with new challenges and opportunities every day. In order to connect with their audience on a deeper level, entrepreneurs have been able to overcome challenges through storytelling.

Moreover, entrepreneurs can gain trust and credibility by sharing their own struggles and triumphs. It is also possible to use storytelling as a powerful marketing tool, enabling entrepreneurs to differentiate themselves from their competitors and effectively communicate their brand’s message. Finally, storytelling can also be a valuable tool for problem-solving, as it encourages creative thinking and provides a framework for finding solutions to complex problems.

Hyatt’s Legacy: A Beacon for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Throughout Michael’s career, he has demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit – bold, adaptable, and relentlessly committed to excellence.

Through his insights, aspiring entrepreneurs can build impactful businesses. He also stresses the importance of understanding deal terms and being flexible in different environments to overcome challenges in building impactful businesses.

Moreover, entrepreneurs can make informed decisions based on the benefits and drawbacks of various business structures, including public or private companies. Further, Michael emphasizes the importance of connecting with audiences on a deeper level in order to stand out in a competitive marketplace and communicate a brand’s message effectively.

As long as you have a mindset that does not dwell on negatives and limitations, then you can accomplish all of this as well.
