In February of 2021, I had Codie Sanchez on my podcast. She is the Managing Director and Partner at Entourage Effect Capital private equity firm — focused on the legal cannabis industry. One of the favorite things I learned from Codie is that it is fun to make a ton of diversified income through side hustles.
Codie taught me that finance could make you a better activist, and she spends her time focusing on finance and how she uses her money to advocate for people and projects she cares about.
“It’s not awareness that makes an impact. The only thing that really makes real change is whoever owns the greenbacks.”— Codie Sanchez
You will want to hear the whole episode here.
Codie Sanchez has appeared on CNBC, Fox, and CNN, written for Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Fortune, and spoken to tens of thousands of people. She knows her stuff and is willing to share all of that with her audiences.
You Don’t Have to be Contrary to Be a Contrarian
The title came naturally because you won’t find a sweeter person than Codie — not a “contrary” bone in her body — yet she has taken on challenging industries in the past and succeeded. Codie Sanchez has made a mantra out of her belief that “understanding money leads to power. Capitalism, commerce, and cannabis are incredible forces for societal, monetary, and regulatory change.”
You’ll really want to listen to Codie’s story about being a journalist along the U.S.-Mexico border, where she learned about the worst of the worst that people could be — and do to one another. Human trafficking and drug smuggling — the horror of it all gave her a whole new perspective on life. She learned that you have to always have the ability to ask the right questions to get to the root of any truth in this life.
The Name of Sanchez
Codie Sanchez told me that “the only difference between my last name Sanchez and a bunch of people across the border last name Sanchez was that I understood a little bit more the economic situation — and I had a better economic situation than they did.”
I don’t know what to say, but that statement really hit me. I wish we could all become crystal clear about those types of issues and grasp the meaning of our own humanity like Codie did when she had that deep flash of perception.
The Reformed Journalist
By way of the road of Contrarian Thinking, Codie has been able to craft her message in a way that makes people sit up and take notice. Codie took the Wall Street perspective, isolated what was good, and made it great because her vision was clear. Her gift of language can cross many boundaries because she communicates well and with so many people.
My Book: The Lifestyle Investor
Codie and I talked for a few moments about the human trafficking situation, how it is happening in every state across this nation, and it’s the tragedy. So many people think those particular tragedies only happen in third-world countries. No, my friends, it’s right under our noses in this country.
I’ll reiterate that all the proceeds from my book, The Lifestyle Investor, go to charity through the group I partnered with called Love Justice International. They are an incredible group working for justice for this situation in 17 different countries.
The Gift of Education and Awareness
Codie takes her gift of education and, through a contrarian mindset, makes others aware of what is happening around them.
The Contrarian Thinker
Many might ask what a contrarian thinker is — or who is a contrarian thinker? Google probably gives the best definition of a contrarian thinker or mindset:
Contrarian thinkers are trailblazers in business. They are the polarizing visionaries who are just as likely to be called crazy as brilliant, and they have the foresight to see hidden opportunities and seize them at just the right moment.
The Ripple Effect
Codie Sanchez and I spoke about financial institutions that are powerhouses with a specific message that they share, a particular strategy, and a sure way to access your money. Unfortunately, these strategies are only a way to make you think that there is no other way to do anything than what they suggest (which is naturally the best way).
Unless you apply the Contrarian Mindset — you cannot help but be swayed by what they are telling you.
Codie tells you how to get into alternative investing and contrarian thinking in the podcast.
The best thing that anybody can do at any time is learn to ask questions and get really comfortable with it. –Codie Sanchez
Codie mentioned that you can learn how to get comfortable with finding and asking questions if you can get into an accelerated development program. These types of programs help develop a mind that thinks clearly.
With a Contrarian Mindset, You’ll Find Better Money Alternatives
With a contrarian mindset, you will have better questions to ask and find better money alternatives. Of course, you can’t just put all your money on one company that you haven’t done great due diligence on — or even if you have done your due diligence — that doesn’t mean that what you choose to invest in will pan out. But with the right questions, you’ll find better ways where you can mitigate risks — and still capture considerable growth.
A “Codie-Contrarian” that I liked was “go into a less crowded market; that’s where you can succeed the best.”
Listen to the podcast for some clarity helps for your thinking. Codie mentioned that she isn’t any more intelligent than anyone else — I’m not sure about that; I believe she is smarter. But she has also taught herself to think and ask questions. She talks about how many fund managers have algorithmic trading that gives an unfair insider advantage — so you may as well find a different place to make your money that will make a difference to someone else.
